About Ngong Hills
The Ngong Hills form a dramatic ridge on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, rising to 2,460 m above sea level just 25 km southwest of Nairobi. Seven rounded summits — immortalised by Karen Blixen in Out of Africa — stretch across a high savannah plateau offering sweeping views over the Rift Valley escarpment and, on clear mornings, a panoramic backdrop of Nairobi's skyline.
The main hiking trail runs approximately 4 km along the ridge between the two main summits and is manageable for most fitness levels. The hills also harbour buffalo, hyena, and a wealth of raptors, so the Kenya Forest Service rangers who accompany visitors carry rifles as a standard precaution. Allow a half day to enjoy the summit views and the descent at a relaxed pace.
